{"id":85,"date":"2010-07-09T20:33:41","date_gmt":"2010-07-10T04:33:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dansmith.cc\/blog\/?p=85"},"modified":"2010-07-09T20:35:57","modified_gmt":"2010-07-10T04:35:57","slug":"hess-brewing-company","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dansmith.cc\/blog\/?p=85","title":{"rendered":"Hess Brewing Company"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Wednesday, July 7, 2010, a new brewery officially opened its doors in San Diego.\u00a0 It&#8217;s named the <a href=\"http:\/\/hessbrewing.com\/\">Hess Brewing<\/a>. \u00a0 They claim to be the first Nano-Brewery in San Diego County.\u00a0 Basically, they run a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dansmith.cc\/gallery\/v\/album_006\/album_001\/2010-07-09+19_21_33.jpg.html\">really small brewery<\/a>&#8230;each batch of beer is only 51 gallons!<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, on Friday afternoons, traffic is really rough in San Diego.\u00a0 So, I usually take side streets home from work.\u00a0 Since this new brewery is just about 1\/2 mile off of my normal drive, I decided to stop by.\u00a0 They had 5 beers on tap, and a special&#8230;taste 5 beers and keep a pint glass for $10.\u00a0 Here is my impressions:<\/p>\n<p>1)\u00a0 Kolsh &#8212; Their Kolsh was a solid beer.\u00a0 This was a bit sweeter than I&#8217;d typically expect a Kolsh to be, but overall, it was very quaffable.<\/p>\n<p>2)\u00a0 Vienna Ale &#8212; Many of the &#8220;good&#8221; Mexican Beers that I drink (Negra Modello, Dos Equis Amber, etc) are actually a beer style known as a &#8220;Vienna Lager.&#8221;\u00a0 This style isn&#8217;t popular in Europe anymore, but is still common in Mexico.\u00a0 Anyway, Hess; Vienna Cream Ale is very sweet, but very, very tasty.\u00a0 It was my favorite beer that they carried!<\/p>\n<p>3)\u00a0 IPA &#8212; Their IPA weighed in at over 8% alcohol.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a bit sweeter than I want my IPA to be, but it has a nice bitterness to counter act the sweetness, and overall is a solid attempt at an IPA.<\/p>\n<p>4)\u00a0 San Diego Pale &#8212; This Double IPA weighs in at an impressive 11.3% alcohol.\u00a0 It has a much dryer body than their IPA, and a much more impressive floral scent.\u00a0 This is one tasty beer, but drinking too much of it could be dangerous!<\/p>\n<p>5)\u00a0 Rye Stout &#8211;This beer also weighs in at just under 10% alcohol.\u00a0 It is a semi-dry stout with too much going on to taste much of the rye malt.\u00a0 It was probably my least favorite beer from them.<\/p>\n<p>All in all, it seems to be a good opening week for them.\u00a0 I&#8217;m excited because I have a Hess Brewing Pint glass, and I look forward to heading back there for more tasting in the future!<\/p>\n<p>Next stop for me?\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/manzanitabrewing.com\/\">Manzanita Brewing Company<\/a>!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Wednesday, July 7, 2010, a new brewery officially opened its doors in San Diego.\u00a0 It&#8217;s named the Hess Brewing. \u00a0 They claim to be the first Nano-Brewery in San Diego County.\u00a0 Basically, they run a really small brewery&#8230;each batch of beer is only 51 gallons!
